The answer

HiPP Stage 1 is HiPP's name for its infant formula from birth, and it comes as 12 packs across four markets and six lines: cow's milk, goat's milk and hydrolysed, in tins, boxes and bottles. They share what the law fixes, which is the composition, and differ in what each pack decides: the carbohydrate, the milk, the size and the price. Eleven of the twelve are lactose only; the German Stage 1 adds starch. Every one is made for the whole first year.

Key takeaways

  • 12 packs carry the number 1, in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and HiPP's export range.
  • Every Stage 1 is infant formula under EU law, made for the whole first year; Stage 2 is optional.
  • 11 of the 12 are lactose only; the German Stage 1 is the one with starch.
  • PRE is from birth too, in Germany only, and differs from the German Stage 1 by having no starch.
  • Organic Life Start, our partner retailer, sells the Dutch, German and British Stage 1 in the United States; ordering through this site pays us a commission.
Nine HiPP packs in one row on a kitchen counter, fronts to the camera: the Dutch HA 1, goat's milk 1 and Stage 1 tins, the German Stage 1 box and its ready-to-feed bottle, the PUR 1 and German HA 1 boxes, a Kindermilch 1+ box and the UK First Infant Milk tin.
Stage 1 across the lines, left to right: the Dutch HA 1, goat's milk 1 and Stage 1 tins, the German Stage 1 box and its ready-to-feed bottle, PUR 1, the German HA 1 and, on the right, the UK First Infant Milk. The Kindermilch 1+ beside it is a toddler milk, not a Stage 1. The International Stage 1 and the UK ready-to-feed First Infant Milk are not in the picture.

Which HiPP Stage 1 packs are there?

12, across four markets and six lines, and they are closer to one another than the shelf makes them look.

Every pack in the table is infant formula from birth, in cow's milk, goat's milk or hydrolysed cow's milk, in tins, boxes and bottles, and the milk column says which is which.456 The one recipe difference that a reader can see from the table is the carbohydrate: 11 packs are lactose only, and the German Stage 1 adds starch.

Is PRE a Stage 1?

Not by name, and yes by age. Germany sells a PRE beside its Stage 1, both from birth, and the whole difference between them is starch.

The German PRE has lactose as its only carbohydrate; the German Stage 1 adds a little, which HiPP describes as more filling.5 The Dutch and British ranges have no PRE because their Stage 1 already has no starch, so a parent in those markets is choosing what a German parent chooses by picking PRE.46 The comparison sets the two German boxes side by side.

What does Stage 1 mean in each market?

The same thing everywhere: infant formula, the category EU law defines for a baby's first months and permits for the whole first year.1

The number is HiPP's, the category is the regulation's, and every pack in the tables above is inside it. Moving on to Stage 2 at six months is a choice: HiPP's own advice page says it is possible rather than required, and the NHS says a first infant formula is the only formula a baby needs until twelve months.32

This stage's packs are outlined. Each block starts at the age printed on its pack; the shading is what each pack is in law, and the six-month line is the only one the law draws.

Which Stage 1 should you choose?

On the panel they are nearly the same milk, so choose on the things that differ.

Whether you want starch, which only the German Stage 1 has. Which milk: cow, goat, or hydrolysed cow for a family with allergy in it, each of which is a line with its own page. And the size of the pack against its price per gram, which is where the Dutch tin and the German box part company.45

Questions parents ask

What is HiPP Stage 1?

HiPP's infant formula from birth, under EU law the category made to be a baby's sole food until solids begin and allowed for the whole first year. HiPP puts the number 1 on 12 packs across Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and its export range, in cow's milk, goat's milk and hydrolysed versions, and every one of them is that same legal category.

Which HiPP Stage 1 is best?

On the panel they are nearly the same milk. Choose on starch, on the milk, and on the pack size against its price.

Is HiPP PRE better than Stage 1?

Neither is better; they are the same category from birth. The German PRE has lactose as its only carbohydrate and the German Stage 1 adds a little starch, which HiPP describes as more filling and which no trial has tested. The comparison page sets the two beside each other.

Which Stage 1 has no starch?

All of them except the German Stage 1. The Dutch tin, the British tin, both HA packs, the goat tin, PUR and every ready-to-feed bottle are lactose only.

How long can a baby stay on Stage 1?

The whole first year. Stage 2 is a separate legal category that HiPP labels from six months, and moving to it is a choice rather than a requirement: HiPP's advice page says so, and the NHS says a first infant formula is the only formula a baby needs until twelve months. A baby who is settled on a Stage 1 has no reason to change tins.

Which Stage 1 can I buy in the United States?

The Dutch, German and British tins, from Organic Life Start, our partner retailer, and the other sellers this site tracks. Every one is imported.

Is the Dutch Stage 1 the same as the German PRE?

On every value this site records their panels match per 100 ml, both are lactose only, and both use the same scoop and water. They are made for different markets, printed in different languages, and sold in a tin and a box of different sizes, so use the scoop and chart from the pack in your hand rather than the other one's.

Is HiPP Stage 1 organic?

The Combiotik, PUR, goat and UK Organic packs carry the EU organic leaf; the HA packs and the HA bottles do not, which the organic page sets out pack by pack.

Do the ready-to-feed bottles count as Stage 1?

Yes: the German Stage 1 bottle and the three British First Infant Milk bottles are infant formula from birth, already mixed. They are not the same recipe as the powder of the same name, because the bottles carry no lactic culture, and the comparison page says what else changes.
