The answer

HiPP UK First Infant Milk is HiPP's formula for babies from birth in the United Kingdom, sold in an 800 g tin printed in English. It is organic, with lactose as its only carbohydrate, and adds galacto-oligosaccharides but no lactic culture. HiPP UK says to make it up with water boiled and left to cool for no more than 30 minutes, which it says stays at around 70 °C, the method the NHS gives. It is not sold under US rules; the sellers here import it.
Key takeaways
- Labelled from birth, organic, with lactose as the only carbohydrate and no starch.
- HiPP UK's method is the NHS method: water boiled and left for no more than 30 minutes, not the 40 to 50 °C the Dutch and German packs ask for.
- One level scoop of 4.3 g to each fluid ounce of water; HiPP UK says to use an opened tin within 3 weeks.
- On every value this site records, its panel per 100 ml matches the Dutch Stage 1, but it lists no lactic culture.
What is in HiPP UK First Infant Milk?
The base is organic skimmed milk and an organic whey product, the first two ingredients HiPP UK lists, and lactose is the only carbohydrate, with no starch.1
The fat is organic palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, with fish oil for DHA at 13.2 mg per 100 ml and an oil from the fungus Mortierella alpina; HiPP adds galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic made from organic lactose.1
Unlike the Dutch and German Combiotik formulas, it lists no lactic culture.18

Values from HiPP's product page for the United Kingdom, checked 18 September 2026. The last column is the range for infant formula in Regulation (EU) 2016/127, Annex I, per 100 kcal unless it says per 100 ml. HiPP gives values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.
Every value is the one HiPP UK gives for 100 ml of feed made from 12.9 g of powder and 90 ml of water.1

How do you prepare it?
Wash your hands and sterilise the equipment. Boil a litre of freshly run water and leave it to cool for no longer than 30 minutes; HiPP UK says not to use artificially softened or reboiled water.1
Pour the water into the bottle, add one level scoop of 4.3 g for each fluid ounce, about 30 ml, and shake it for about fifteen seconds. Cool it under the cold tap to around body temperature, test it, and feed it straight away.1
| Water | Scoops | Powder | Feed size | Water temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 ml · 1 fl oz | 1 | 4.3 g | 33 ml · 1.1 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 90 ml · 3 fl oz | 3 | 12.9 g | 100 ml · 3.4 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 120 ml · 4 fl oz | 4 | 17.2 g | 133 ml · 4.5 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 150 ml · 5 fl oz | 5 | 21.5 g | 167 ml · 5.6 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 180 ml · 6 fl oz | 6 | 25.8 g | 200 ml · 6.8 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 210 ml · 7 fl oz | 7 | 30.1 g | 233 ml · 7.9 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
One scoop is 4.3 g, level, not packed. The feed size column is the volume in the bottle after the powder dissolves.
How much should a baby drink?
| Age | Feeds a day | Water per feed | Scoops | Water a day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weeks 0 to 2 | 7 to 8 | 60 ml | 2 | 420 to 480 ml |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | 5 to 7 | 90 ml | 3 | 450 to 630 ml |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | 5 to 6 | 120 ml | 4 | 600 to 720 ml |
| Months 2 to 4 | 5 | 150 ml | 5 | 750 ml |
| Month 5 | 4 to 5 | 180 ml | 6 | 720 to 900 ml |
| Month 6 | 4 | 210 ml | 7 | 840 ml |
| Months 7 to 9 | 4 | 150 ml | 5 | 600 ml |
| Months 10 to 12 | 3 | 120 ml | 4 | 360 ml |
HiPP's own chart from the pack; water a day is feeds times water per feed. Babies vary, and a hungry or sleepy baby is a better guide than the table.
HiPP UK's guide runs from the first two weeks to twelve months, with smaller feeds from seven months as solid food takes over. It calls the amounts a guide only: a baby should be fed on demand, especially in the first weeks.1
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
It is for babies from birth who are not breastfed, or not only breastfed. The tin itself recommends that it is used only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist.2
The NHS says first infant formula is the only formula a baby needs and can stay the main drink through the first year; moving on to a follow-on milk at six months brings no benefit, it says.5
It is made from cow's milk and contains fish oil, so it is not for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk allergy, for whom a GP prescribes a formula with fully broken-down protein.15

I was so relieved to find an infant milk that adheres to strict organic farming standards without using cheap fillers like palm oil or soy.

The UK version is fantastic for parents who prefer a box format and a slightly different prebiotic blend. My baby’s digestion has been perfect since the first bottle.
Questions parents ask
Is HiPP UK First Infant Milk the same as the Dutch Stage 1?
On every value this site records, their panels match per 100 ml, and both take a 4.3 g scoop to about 30 ml of water. They differ in two ways: the UK tin lists no lactic culture, where the Dutch tin adds L. fermentum, and HiPP tells parents to make them up at different temperatures.
Why does HiPP UK say to use hotter water than HiPP's other packs?
HiPP UK follows the NHS: boil the water and leave it for no more than 30 minutes, so that it stays at 70 °C or more, hot enough to kill bacteria that powdered formula can carry. The Dutch and German packs, which add a lactic culture, ask for 40 to 50 °C instead, so as not to damage it.
Does HiPP UK First Infant Milk contain probiotics?
No lactic culture appears in the ingredients HiPP UK lists. It does add galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic, made from organic lactose.
How long can a baby stay on HiPP UK First Infant Milk?
Through the whole first year. HiPP UK's feeding guide runs to twelve months, with smaller feeds from seven months as food takes over, and the NHS says first infant formula can stay a baby's main drink until the first birthday.
Is HiPP UK First Infant Milk approved by the FDA?
No. The FDA does not approve infant formulas, and this tin is made for the UK market. It is made in Germany, and no HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States.
How long does an opened tin last?
HiPP UK says to use it within 3 weeks of opening, kept in a cool, dry place and not in the fridge.
Are the instructions on the tin in English?
Yes. It is printed in English for the UK, and its feeding guide gives the water in fluid ounces as well as millilitres, so there is no Dutch or German panel to translate.
Can I make up bottles in advance?
HiPP UK says not to, for hygiene reasons: make each feed fresh, give it straight away and throw away what is left. The NHS adds that bacteria multiply fast at room temperature and still survive and multiply in a fridge, only more slowly.
Does HiPP UK First Infant Milk contain palm oil?
Yes. Organic palm oil is one of the three vegetable oils HiPP UK lists, with organic rapeseed and sunflower oil.
