The answer

HiPP UK Follow On Milk is HiPP's organic formula for babies from six months in the United Kingdom, sold in an 800 g tin printed in English. Beside the First Infant Milk it carries more iron and calcium per 100 ml and takes a larger scoop, and HiPP UK says a baby on it needs about 500 to 600 ml a day alongside food. The NHS says switching to a follow-on formula at six months brings no benefit, so staying on the first milk is a sound choice.
Key takeaways
- Labelled from six months, never before; the NHS says to ask a health visitor first.
- Per 100 ml it has 1.0 mg of iron, where the First Infant Milk has 0.50 mg.
- One level scoop of 4.5 g to each fluid ounce of water, made up with water boiled and left for no more than 30 minutes.
- The NHS says switching to follow-on formula at six months has no benefits, and first infant formula can stay the main drink until the first birthday.
What is in HiPP UK Follow On Milk?
The first ingredients are organic skimmed milk and organic lactose, then the oils; the organic whey product comes fourth, where it is second in the First Infant Milk. Lactose is the only carbohydrate, with no starch.19
The fat is organic palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, with fish oil for DHA at 13.6 mg per 100 ml, and HiPP adds galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic made from organic lactose. No lactic culture is listed.1

HiPP's page for health professionals says follow-on formulae carry more iron and calcium than infant formulae and have a casein-whey ratio adapted to improve satiety.10

Values from HiPP's product page for the United Kingdom, checked 18 September 2026. The last column is the range for follow-on formula in Regulation (EU) 2016/127, Annex II, per 100 kcal unless it says per 100 ml. HiPP gives values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.
Every value is the one HiPP UK gives for 100 ml of feed made from 13.4 g of powder and 90 ml of water. The iron is twice the First Infant Milk's, and the calcium is higher too.19

How do you prepare it?
Wash your hands and sterilise the equipment. Boil a litre of freshly run water and leave it to cool for no longer than 30 minutes, without using artificially softened or reboiled water.1
Pour the water into the bottle and add one level scoop of 4.5 g for each fluid ounce, about 30 ml. Shake it until the powder dissolves, cool it under the cold tap to around body temperature, test it and feed it straight away; HiPP UK says to use an opened tin within 3 weeks.1
| Water | Scoops | Powder | Feed size | Water temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 ml · 1 fl oz | 1 | 4.5 g | 33 ml · 1.1 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 90 ml · 3 fl oz | 3 | 13.5 g | 100 ml · 3.4 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 120 ml · 4 fl oz | 4 | 18.0 g | 133 ml · 4.5 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 150 ml · 5 fl oz | 5 | 22.5 g | 167 ml · 5.6 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 180 ml · 6 fl oz | 6 | 27.0 g | 200 ml · 6.8 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
| 210 ml · 7 fl oz | 7 | 31.5 g | 233 ml · 7.9 fl oz | Boiled, then cooled for no more than 30 minutes |
One scoop is 4.5 g, level, not packed. The feed size column is the volume in the bottle after the powder dissolves.
How much should a baby drink?
| Boiled water | Scoops |
|---|---|
| 150 ml | 5 |
| 180 ml | 6 |
The pack gives bottle sizes rather than ages, so this is what it prints and all it prints. How much a child takes varies, and a hungry or sleepy child is a better guide than the table.
The guide gives two bottle sizes and no ages, and HiPP UK puts a baby's day at about 500 to 600 ml, as a drink, on cereal or in other food.1
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
It is for babies from six months who are also eating food. The tin says it is not to be used as a breastmilk substitute before that age, and that the decision to start weaning should be made with a health professional.3
The NHS says follow-on formula should never be given before six months, that switching to it at six months brings no benefit, and that the labels look so alike that they are worth reading carefully.6
It is made from cow's milk and contains fish oil, so it is not for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk allergy.16

HiPP makes a separate range for each market, and the UK tin is made in Germany. It matches the Dutch Stage 2 and the German Stage 2 without starch per 100 ml on every row but vitamin B2, 0.15 mg here against 0.14 mg on both, and both of those add a lactic culture. It is not sold under US rules: no HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States.111

Questions parents ask
Do I have to switch to HiPP UK Follow On Milk at six months?
No. The NHS says research shows no benefit in switching to follow-on formula at six months, and that first infant formula can stay a baby's main drink until the first birthday. HiPP UK itself calls follow on milk a choice parents can make from six months.
What is the difference between HiPP UK First Infant Milk and Follow On Milk?
Per 100 ml the follow on milk has twice the iron and more calcium, a little more energy, and whey further down its ingredients. It takes a 4.5 g scoop instead of 4.3 g, still one scoop to each fluid ounce.
Can HiPP UK Follow On Milk be given before six months?
No. The NHS says follow-on formula should never be fed to babies under six months, and the tin says it is not to be used as a breastmilk substitute before that age.
How much HiPP UK Follow On Milk does a baby need a day?
About 500 to 600 ml, HiPP UK says, as a drink, on cereal or in other food, and it calls that a guide only. A baby eating well may need less; ask a health professional if you are unsure.
How many scoops go into a bottle?
One level scoop to each fluid ounce, about 30 ml of water: the tin's guide gives five scoops for 150 ml and six for 180 ml.
Does HiPP UK Follow On Milk contain probiotics?
No lactic culture is listed in its ingredients. Like the first milk, it adds galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic, made from organic lactose, at 0.4 g per 100 ml.
Why does HiPP say follow-on formula is more filling?
HiPP's page for health professionals says follow-on formulae have a casein-whey ratio adapted to improve satiety, and gives about 60 casein to 40 whey as an example, against about 40 to 60 for infant formula. That is HiPP's own claim. The NHS, writing about formulas with more casein, says there is no evidence babies settle better or sleep longer on them.
Is HiPP UK Follow On Milk approved by the FDA?
No. The FDA does not approve infant formulas, and this tin is made in Germany for the UK market. No HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States.
