The answer

HiPP German Stage 2 is the follow-on formula in HiPP's German organic range, labelled for babies after six months who also eat solid food. It adds organic starch, 1.2 g per 100 ml, which HiPP says makes it creamier and more filling, and it has more iron than Stage 1. It comes in a 600 g box, with one 4.5 g scoop per 30 ml of water. HiPP says moving on to it is possible but not required.
Key takeaways
- Labelled after six months, as part of a mixed diet, and never as a breastmilk substitute before then.
- It adds organic starch, 1.2 g per 100 ml; HiPP sells a Stage 2 without starch beside it.
- Per 100 ml it has 1.0 mg of iron, where the German Stage 1 has 0.60 mg.
- HiPP says a move from PRE or Stage 1 is possible but not required, and the NHS finds no benefit in switching at six months.
What is in HiPP German Stage 2?
The base is organic skimmed milk and an organic whey product. The carbohydrate is lactose with organic starch, 1.2 g of it per 100 ml, which HiPP says makes the formula creamier and suitably filling.2
The fat is organic palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, with fish oil for DHA at 13.6 mg per 100 ml, and HiPP adds galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic, and the lactic culture Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716.2

Values from HiPP's label for Germany, checked 18 September 2026. The last column is the range for follow-on formula in Regulation (EU) 2016/127, Annex II, per 100 kcal unless it says per 100 ml. The label prints values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.
Every value is the one HiPP prints for 100 ml of made-up feed, which is 13.5 g of powder in 90 ml of water. Beside Stage 1 it has more iron and calcium, as follow-on formulas do.28

How do you prepare it?
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to 40 to 50 °C, pour it into the bottle, then add one level scoop (4.5 g) for every 30 ml. Shake it hard, cool it to about body temperature and check it; HiPP says to make each bottle fresh, feed it straight away and never reuse what is left.2
| Water | Scoops | Powder | Feed size | Water temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 ml · 1 fl oz | 1 | 4.5 g | 33 ml · 1.1 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 90 ml · 3 fl oz | 3 | 13.5 g | 100 ml · 3.4 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 120 ml · 4 fl oz | 4 | 18.0 g | 133 ml · 4.5 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 150 ml · 5 fl oz | 5 | 22.5 g | 167 ml · 5.6 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 180 ml · 6 fl oz | 6 | 27.0 g | 200 ml · 6.8 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 210 ml · 7 fl oz | 7 | 31.5 g | 233 ml · 7.9 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
One scoop is 4.5 g, level, not packed. The feed size column is the volume in the bottle after the powder dissolves.

- Frisches Trinkwasser abkochen und auf ca. 40 - 50 °C abkühlen*.
- Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40 to 50 °C.
- Gewünschte Menge abgekochtes Wasser (s. Tabelle) in ein Fläschchen geben.
- Pour the amount of boiled water you need (see the table) into a bottle.
- Empfohlene Pulvermenge (s. Tabelle) abmessen. Messlöffel locker füllen und abstreifen. Pulver zum Wasser geben.
- Measure the powder the table gives. Fill the scoop loosely and level it off. Add the powder to the water.
- Fläschchen verschließen und mehrmals kräftig schütteln.
- Close the bottle and shake it hard several times.
- Auf Trinktemperatur (ca. 37 °C) abkühlen. Temperatur überprüfen.
- Let it cool to drinking temperature, about 37 °C, and check it.
How much should a baby drink?
| Made-up bottle | Boiled water | Scoops |
|---|---|---|
| 170 ml | 150 ml | 5 |
| 200 ml | 180 ml | 6 |
| 235 ml | 210 ml | 7 |
The pack gives bottle sizes rather than ages, so this is what it prints and all it prints. How much a child takes varies, and a hungry or sleepy child is a better guide than the table. The pack says a child needs about 5 of these a day.
The box gives bottle sizes rather than ages. It says each solid meal, once fully introduced, replaces one bottle.2
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
It is for babies after six months who are eating solid food as well. The box says follow-on formula should not replace breast milk in the first six months, and that an earlier start is for the pediatrician or midwife to decide.2
HiPP says a move from PRE or Stage 1 is possible but not required, and the NHS says switching to follow-on formula at six months brings no benefit.76
It is made from cow's milk and contains fish oil, so it is not for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy, and it is not lactose-free.26

Questions parents ask
What is the difference between HiPP German Stage 2 and Stage 2 without starch?
The carbohydrate. Stage 2 adds organic starch, 1.2 g per 100 ml, and has less lactose; the version without starch keeps lactose as its only carbohydrate, as PRE does. On every other value this site records, the two match per 100 ml.
Do I have to move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 at six months?
No. HiPP says moving on from PRE or Stage 1 is possible but not required, and the NHS says switching to a follow-on formula at six months brings no benefit; a first formula can stay the main drink through the first year.
Can HiPP German Stage 2 be given before six months?
Not as a replacement for breast milk. The box says follow-on formula should not be used as a breastmilk substitute in the first six months, only after them as part of a mixed diet, and that a baby's needs can make earlier use necessary, to be decided with the pediatrician or midwife. The NHS says never before six months.
Why does HiPP put starch in Stage 2?
HiPP says the starch makes it creamier and suitably filling for the age. That is its description of its own recipe, not the result of a trial.
How many scoops of HiPP German Stage 2 for a bottle?
One level scoop of 4.5 g for every 30 ml of water. The box gives three bottles: 5 scoops in 150 ml of water, 6 in 180 ml and 7 in 210 ml.
Why does HiPP say 40 to 50 °C when the CDC says 70 °C?
The box asks for water that is not too hot so as not to damage the lactic cultures. The CDC's 70 °C advice is for babies under two months, born early or with a weakened immune system, to kill germs in the powder; a baby on Stage 2 is past that age, but ask your pediatrician if yours was born early or is unwell.
How long does an opened box of HiPP German Stage 2 last?
HiPP says to close the bag well, keep it dry at room temperature, and use it within 3 weeks of opening.
Is HiPP German Stage 2 approved by the FDA?
No. The FDA does not approve infant formulas, and this box is made for the German market. No HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States, and the box has no US nutrition facts panel.
Does HiPP German Stage 2 contain palm oil?
Yes. Organic palm oil is one of the three vegetable oils in the fat blend, with organic rapeseed and sunflower oil.
