The answer

HiPP Organic is HiPP's formula range for the United Kingdom: First Infant Milk from birth, Follow On Milk from six months and Growing Up Milk from twelve months, each in an 800 g tin printed in English and made in Germany. Unlike HiPP's German and Dutch Combiotik packs, the UK tins list no lactic culture, and HiPP UK says to make them up with water left to cool for no more than 30 minutes, the method the NHS gives.

Key takeaways

  • First Infant Milk is labelled from birth and Follow On Milk from six months; Growing Up Milk, from twelve months, is on the toddler milk page.
  • The UK tins list galacto-oligosaccharides but no lactic culture, and carry no Combiotik name.
  • HiPP UK's preparation is the NHS method, water left for no more than 30 minutes, where the German and Dutch packs ask for 40 to 50 °C.
  • The NHS says first infant formula serves the whole first year and switching at six months brings no benefit.

How do the UK tins differ from HiPP's German and Dutch packs?

The UK tins list galacto-oligosaccharides but no lactic culture, where the German and Dutch Combiotik packs add Limosilactobacillus fermentum.28

The preparation differs to match. HiPP UK says to boil the water and leave it for no more than 30 minutes, which it says keeps it at around 70 °C; the Dutch tin asks for 40 to 50 °C, so as not to damage its cultures.258

The UK tins are printed in English, with the water in fluid ounces beside millilitres, and HiPP UK's pages say each is a product of Germany.23

Which UK formula does a baby need, and when?

Start on First Infant Milk. The NHS says first infant formula should be the first formula a baby has, and that it can stay the main drink through the whole first year.7

Follow On Milk is labelled from six months and never before; the NHS says switching to a follow-on formula at six months brings no benefit.37

Can you buy HiPP UK formula in the United States?

Not from HiPP, which makes these tins for the UK market, and no HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States; the tins that reach US parents come through sellers.110

Questions parents ask

Is HiPP UK formula the same as HiPP's German or Dutch formula?

Close, but not the same. On every value this site records, the UK First Infant Milk matches the Dutch Stage 1 and the German PRE per 100 ml, with the same scoop. The UK tin lists no lactic culture, and HiPP tells UK parents to use hotter water.

Why is there no Combiotik on the UK tins?

HiPP sells the UK range as HiPP Organic, and the ingredients HiPP UK lists include galacto-oligosaccharides but no lactic culture, the other half of what HiPP calls Combiotik in Germany and the Netherlands.

Which HiPP UK formula should a newborn start on?

First Infant Milk, the one labelled from birth: the NHS says first infant formula should always be the first formula a baby has.

When should a baby move to HiPP UK Follow On Milk?

Never before six months, and not necessarily at all. The NHS says research shows no benefit in switching to follow-on formula at six months, and HiPP UK calls it a choice parents can make then.

What temperature should the water be for HiPP UK formula?

HiPP UK says to boil the water and leave it for no more than 30 minutes, which it says keeps it at around 70 °C. That is the NHS method, and it matches the CDC's advice for babies under two months. The German and Dutch packs ask for cooler water, to protect their lactic culture.

Where is HiPP UK formula made?

In Germany. HiPP UK's page for each of its powders says Product of Germany, and the tins carry DE-ÖKO-001, the organic control code of HiPP's German company.

Does HiPP make Comfort and Anti-Reflux formulas in the UK?

Yes. HiPP UK lists a Comfort Milk and an Anti-Reflux Milk, both foods for special medical purposes to be used under medical supervision, which means a health professional should advise on them before a baby has them. This site covers HiPP UK's Comfort Milk, and the German Comfort and Anti-Reflux formulas, on its special formulas page.

Is HiPP UK formula sold in the United States?

Not by HiPP. It is made for the UK market, and the tins that reach US parents are imported by sellers.

Is the UK formula organic?

Yes. The tins say they are certified organic in line with UK and EU rules, and the milk, the whey, the oils and the lactose HiPP UK lists are all organic.
