The answer
HiPP Stage 3 is the last stage before HiPP's toddler milks, and what it means depends on which pack you hold. 6 packs carry the number, across three markets and five lines, and every one is a follow-on formula under EU law; what differs is the age on the front: From the 10th month on the German boxes, From 12 months on the British tin. None of them is required: a first infant formula serves the whole first year, and cow's milk can follow it.
Key takeaways
- 6 packs carry the number 3, in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and every one is a follow-on formula in law.

- Nobody needs a Stage 3: a first milk serves the whole first year, and from twelve months whole cow's milk can be the main drink.

What age is Stage 3 for?
Whichever age the pack in your hand says, because the number is HiPP's and each market's HiPP chose its own.
The German boxes are labelled From the 10th month, the Dutch tin From 10 months, the Dutch goat tin From the 12th month, and the British tin From 12 months.546 Three months separate the earliest from the latest, for packs that are the same legal category and nearly the same panel.

- Infant formula: may be the only food, from birth
- Follow-on formula: after six months, beside other food
- Milk for young children: from one year
Is Stage 3 a formula or a toddler milk?
A formula, in law, on every pack this site records.
Each Stage 3 is follow-on formula, the same category as Stage 2, which is why the British tin says Growing Up Milk on the front and follow on milk on the back.6 HiPP's toddler milks, Kindermilch in Germany and Junior in the Netherlands, are a different thing: drinks for young children, which EU law does not define at all, and they have their own page. The comparison of Stage 3 with Kindermilch 1+ sets out how far apart the two are.
What comes after Stage 3, and does a baby need it at all?
Nothing has to. A first infant formula serves the whole first year, and from the first birthday whole cow's milk can be the main drink.2
HiPP's own advice page says moving on to a later stage is possible rather than required, so a baby settled on a Stage 2, or still on a Stage 1, has no reason to change.3 For what replaces the bottle and how to make the change, the guide on stopping formula has the NHS position and the vitamin advice that flips on the day formula stops.
Questions parents ask
What is HiPP Stage 3?
HiPP's last numbered formula before its toddler milks: 6 packs across Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, every one a follow-on formula under EU law, and each labelled from a different age. The German boxes print From the 10th month, the Dutch tin From 10 months, the Dutch goat From the 12th month and the British tin From 12 months.
Does a baby need Stage 3?
No. A first infant formula serves the whole first year, and from twelve months whole cow's milk can be the main drink.
Is HiPP Stage 3 a toddler milk?
Not in law: every Stage 3 pack this site records is a follow-on formula, the same category as Stage 2, which is why the British tin says Growing Up Milk on the front and follow on milk on the back. HiPP's toddler milks are Kindermilch and Junior, and they have their own page.
What comes after Stage 3?
In Germany Kindermilch 1+ and 2+, in the Netherlands Junior, in Britain nothing numbered; or whole cow's milk from the first birthday, which the NHS says is the usual next step.
Why does Stage 3 start at a different age on each pack?
Because the number is HiPP's and each market's HiPP sets its own age. The German boxes are labelled From the 10th month, the Dutch tin From 10 months, the Dutch goat From the 12th month and the British tin From 12 months; the age on the front is HiPP's choice, and the category on the back is the law's.
Which HiPP Stage 3 can I buy in the United States?
The Dutch and German Stage 3 and the British Growing Up Milk, from Organic Life Start, our partner retailer, and the sellers this site tracks.
Is Stage 3 different from Stage 2?
Less than the number suggests. On the German boxes 35 of the 41 rows are identical and the six that move are carbohydrate, protein and vitamin B2, with the same scoop and the same dilution; the comparison page has every row. The step is a marketing stage rather than a change of legal category, which is what the step from 1 to 2 was.
Can a baby stay on Stage 2 instead?
Yes. Stage 2 and Stage 3 are the same legal category, and nothing on any pack or in any guidance says a baby must move up. HiPP's own advice is that moving on is possible rather than required.
Is the goat Stage 3 the same age as the others?
No: the Dutch goat Stage 3 is labelled From the 12th month, later than the Dutch cow's milk Stage 3, and HiPP's Dutch site no longer lists it, though sellers still stock it. Its own page says what the label calls it and what a child of that age needs.
