The answer

HiPP sells a toddler milk in each market under its own name: in Germany Kindermilch 1+ and 2+, milk drinks that are not organic, and an organic Kindermilch PUR; in the Netherlands Junior from two years; in the UK an organic Growing Up Milk from twelve months. The UK milk and Kindermilch PUR carry a follow-on formula's legal name. The NHS says children aged one to five do not need formula milks, and the American Academy of Pediatrics advises whole cow's milk from twelve months for most children.

Key takeaways

  • Germany: Kindermilch 1+ from one year and 2+ from two years; the Netherlands: Junior from two years. These are milk drinks for young children, and none is organic.
  • The UK Growing Up Milk and Germany's newer Kindermilch PUR are organic, sold under a follow-on formula's legal name.
  • EU law does not define young-child formula, and the European Food Safety Authority found it no more necessary than a normal diet.
  • The NHS says children from one to five do not need formula milks; whole cow's milk can be the main drink from one.

In Germany HiPP sells Kindermilch 1+ from one year and 2+ from two years, and a newer organic Kindermilch PUR from the twelfth month; in the Netherlands a Junior milk from two years; and in the UK Growing Up Milk from twelve months. HiPP Austria's English export range adds a Junior 3 from one year, with the Kindermilch 1+ recipe. The Dutch Junior matches the Kindermilch 2+ per 100 ml on every row both packs print, with its own scoop.138910

Is a toddler milk a formula?

Not in EU law. The European Commission's report on these drinks says young-child formulae are not defined in EU legislation, and that general food law covers them.7

The packs name themselves differently. The German Kindermilch box calls it a milk drink for feeding young children, while the UK tin calls Growing Up Milk an organic follow on milk from the twelfth month, and the Kindermilch PUR box carries the legal name of an organic follow-on formula.239

What that does to a panel is easiest to see against the formula a step below it, which the Stage 3 comparison sets out row by row.

Does a toddler need one?

The NHS says children aged one to five do not need formula milks, toddler milks included, and that pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed cow's milk can be the main drink from one.4 The guide has all three bodies in full, and the guide on stopping has the practical half.

The American Academy of Pediatrics calls toddler formulas generally unnecessary, and says they offer no benefit over much less expensive cow's milk for most children older than twelve months. The European Food Safety Authority found young-child formula no more necessary than a normal diet, though it is one way to add some nutrients.56

If you buy one, which?

If your pediatrician suggests a toddler milk, the choice is organic against not: the UK Growing Up Milk and the German Kindermilch PUR are organic and list no lactic culture, and the German Kindermilch 1+ and 2+ are not organic and add one.239

HiPP recommends 300 ml of Kindermilch a day from a cup, and about 350 ml of Growing Up Milk; both are HiPP's guides for its own drinks.23

Questions parents ask

Does a toddler need HiPP toddler milk?

Most do not. The NHS says children aged one to five do not need formula milks, growing-up and toddler milks included, and the American Academy of Pediatrics calls toddler formulas unnecessary for most children and advises whole cow's milk from twelve months. A toddler milk is for when a pediatrician names a reason, such as a child who eats very little.

What is the difference between Kindermilch and Growing Up Milk?

They are made for different markets. Kindermilch is HiPP's German milk drink for young children, not organic, with a lactic culture; Growing Up Milk is HiPP's organic UK milk from twelve months, with no culture listed and a follow-on milk's legal name on the tin.

Is toddler milk a formula?

Not in EU law, which does not define young-child formula at all, the European Commission says. The German Kindermilch 1+ and 2+ boxes call themselves a milk drink for young children; the UK tin and the Kindermilch PUR box carry a follow-on formula's legal name.

Is HiPP toddler milk organic?

The UK Growing Up Milk and the German Kindermilch PUR are organic; the German Kindermilch 1+ and 2+, the Dutch Junior and the International Junior 3 are not, with no Bio in their names.

What should a toddler drink instead?

The NHS says pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed cow's milk can be a child's main drink from one, and skimmed milk not before five; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends whole cow's milk from twelve months and says toddler formulas offer no benefit over it for most children.

How much toddler milk does HiPP recommend?

For Kindermilch, 300 ml a day from a cup, as two portions with meals; for the UK Growing Up Milk, about 350 ml a day. Both are HiPP's guides for its own drinks, not requirements.

Can Kindermilch be made with cold water?

Yes, HiPP says Kindermilch can be made warm or cold; for a cold drink, run the tap until the water comes out cold.

Why does the European Food Safety Authority say toddler milk is not necessary?

In 2013 it found that young-child formula has no unique role and cannot be considered necessary to meet young children's needs compared with other foods in a normal diet, though it is one way to add some nutrients.
