The answer

HiPP Anti-Reflux Milk 800 g tin, UK label, front
Front of the pack

You cannot order this through milkatlas in the United States. The sellers below ship it there.

HiPP UK Anti-Reflux Milk is a food for special medical purposes, from birth, which HiPP UK sells for the dietary management of reflux and regurgitation. It is thickened with carob bean gum, keeps intact cow's milk protein and lactose as its only carbohydrate, and lists neither a prebiotic nor a culture. It is not organic. Its pack asks for water boiled and cooled for 45 minutes, and HiPP UK says to use it only on a healthcare professional's advice.

Key takeaways

  • A food for special medical purposes from birth, which HiPP UK says to use only on a healthcare professional's advice.
  • Its pack asks for water cooled for 45 minutes, where every other HiPP UK tin says no more than 30. That is the opposite instruction, and the NHS explains why.
  • The thickener is carob bean gum, which the panel counts as fibre at 0.4 g per 100 ml.
  • The protein is intact cow's milk protein, so this is not a tin for a baby with a cow's milk allergy.
  • Sold under the HiPP Organic name, but nothing in its ingredient list is organic, unlike the UK First Infant Milk.

What is in HiPP UK Anti-Reflux Milk?

The first ingredients are skimmed milk and a whey product, then vegetable oils, then lactose, then the thickening agent carob bean gum.1 The protein is intact cow's milk protein, which HiPP UK states under the panel, and lactose is the only carbohydrate.1

Fish oil adds DHA at 13.2 mg per 100 ml. No prebiotic and no lactic culture are listed, and no ingredient is organic, which is worth saying twice because HiPP UK's company name is HiPP Organic and its First Infant Milk genuinely is.14

Values from HiPP's product page for the United Kingdom, checked 23 September 2026. As a food for special medical purposes it is made to Regulation (EU) 2016/128, which lets its recipe depart from the ranges for infant formula where its medical use requires. HiPP gives values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.

Every value is the one HiPP UK gives for 100 ml made from 12.9 g of powder and 90 ml of water.1 The fibre row, 0.4 g per 100 ml, is the carob bean gum: on the other HiPP tins that row is a prebiotic instead.

The nutrition table printed on the UK Anti-Reflux Milk tin
The top of the nutrition table on the tin, per 100 ml of feed and per 100 g of powder. If the tin and this page ever disagree, the tin is right and we log a correction.

How do you prepare it?

Wash your hands and sterilise the equipment. Boil the water and leave it to cool for 45 minutes, measure it into the bottle and add one level scoop of 4.3 g for each fluid ounce, about 30 ml. HiPP UK says not to press the powder down and not to use softened or reboiled water.1

Roll the bottle between your palms for five seconds, shake it for twenty, then leave it to stand for seven minutes to thicken and shake it again. Cool it to drinking temperature under the cold tap, test it, and feed it straight away with a single fast-flow teat.1

210 ml · 7 fl oz730.1 g233 ml · 7.9 fl ozBoiled, then cooled for 45 minutes

One scoop is 4.3 g, level, not packed. The feed size column is the volume in the bottle after the powder dissolves.

That cooling time is the thing to notice. Every other HiPP UK tin says to leave the water for no more than 30 minutes, so that it is still above 70 °C when it meets the powder.36 This one says to leave it for 45 minutes, which takes it well below that.1

The NHS addresses exactly this, on the page where it describes anti-reflux formula. It says the instructions for making up these formulas may differ from standard formula, that some manufacturers recommend lower temperatures, and that otherwise the feed may get lumpy. It then says the other half out loud: powdered formula is not sterile, and making it up at lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain.8

How much should a baby drink?

Month 64210 ml7840 ml
Months 7 to 94150 ml5600 ml
Months 10 to 123120 ml4360 ml

HiPP's own chart from the pack; water a day is feeds times water per feed. Babies vary, and a hungry or sleepy baby is a better guide than the table.

HiPP UK's guide runs from the first two weeks to twelve months, with weights beside the ages, and it calls the amounts a guide only: a baby should be fed on demand.1

Who is it for, and who is it not for?

HiPP UK says this tin is for the dietary management of reflux and regurgitation from birth, that it is a food for special medical purposes, and that it should only be used on the advice of a healthcare professional.1 It adds two warnings worth repeating: use a single fast-flow teat, and do not use it alongside antacids or other feed thickeners.1

The NHS says the same about the category. Anti-reflux formula is suitable from birth but only under medical supervision, it is thickened with the aim of preventing reflux, and although it sits on pharmacy and supermarket shelves the NHS recommends using it only on a health professional's advice.8

It is not a tin for a cow's milk allergy. The protein here is intact, not broken down at all, so a baby who reacts to cow's milk protein has nothing to gain from it.17

HiPP sells an Anti-Reflux formula in Germany as well, in a 600 g box rather than this 800 g tin. The two are close without matching: of the rows both packs print, fourteen differ, among them calcium, selenium and molybdenum. The German box also adds the culture Limosilactobacillus fermentum, which this one does not list, and asks for water at 40 to 50 °C rather than a cooling time.19

Questions parents ask

What is HiPP UK Anti-Reflux Milk for?

HiPP UK sells it for the dietary management of reflux and regurgitation from birth, as a food for special medical purposes. It is thickened so that feeds are more likely to stay down, and HiPP UK asks parents to take advice from a healthcare professional before starting it.

Why does the pack say 45 minutes when every other HiPP tin says 30?

Because the thickener needs cooler water. The NHS says some anti-reflux formulas are made up at lower temperatures than usual, otherwise the feed goes lumpy.

Is cooler water safe?

It is the maker's instruction, and the NHS repeats it while being blunt about the trade: powdered formula is not sterile, and making it up at a lower temperature will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain. It says to take extra care, follow the pack, and speak to a midwife, health visitor or GP.

What is the thickener?

Carob bean gum, also called locust bean gum. It is the fourth ingredient after lactose, and the panel counts it as fibre.

Can it be used for a cow's milk allergy?

No. Its protein is intact cow's milk protein, not broken down at all, so a baby who reacts to cow's milk protein will react to this. A diagnosed allergy is a question for the doctor who made the diagnosis, and the NHS says such a baby is prescribed a formula with fully broken-down protein.

Is HiPP UK Anti-Reflux Milk organic?

No. HiPP UK sells it under its HiPP Organic name, but nothing in the ingredient list is organic, where the UK First Infant Milk's milk and oils are.

Does my baby need a different teat?

HiPP UK says to use a single, fast-flow teat, because the milk is thicker than a standard formula once it has stood and thickened.

My baby's stools changed. Is that the milk?

It may be. HiPP UK says on this pack that because of the natural thickener you may notice changes in your baby's stool, and that this is perfectly normal. That is HiPP's statement about its own product, not a trial result, so watch weight and feeding rather than nappies.

Can it be used with an antacid?

HiPP UK says this product should not be used together with antacids or with other feed thickeners. Ask the prescriber before combining anything.

Is it the same as the German HiPP Anti-Reflux?

Close, not the same. Of the rows both packs print, thirteen differ, and this tin adds chromium, molybdenum and salt. The German box holds 600 g, adds the culture L. fermentum, which this tin does not list, and asks for water at 40 to 50 °C rather than a cooling time.

  • The page had said this tin adds chromium, molybdenum and salt to the rows the German Anti-Reflux box prints, and that thirteen of the rows both packs print differ. The German box prints all three as well; this site's record of it had left them out. Salt and chromium carry the same values on both, and molybdenum differs, 1.5 µg here against 0.58 µg, so fourteen of the 46 rows both packs print differ. The page now says so.
