The answer
HiPP Comfort and HiPP Anti-Reflux are HiPP's special formulas, sold as foods for special medical purposes. By their German boxes, Comfort is for the dietary management of wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation, with broken-down protein and less lactose; Anti-Reflux is for frequent spitting up, thickened with locust bean gum. Both boxes say to use them only after talking to the pediatrician, and only for as long as the symptoms need. Neither is for a baby with a cow's milk protein allergy.
Key takeaways
- Both are foods for special medical purposes, from birth, to be used only after talking to the pediatrician.
- Comfort has hydrolysed whey protein and less lactose; Anti-Reflux keeps intact milk protein and is thickened with locust bean gum.
- An Anti-Reflux bottle has to stand for seven minutes to thicken before the feed.
- The NHS says there is no evidence that comfort formulas prevent colic or constipation, and advises anti-reflux formula only on a health professional's advice.

What is a food for special medical purposes?
A formula for the dietary management of a condition, to be used under medical supervision, as both German boxes put it. EU law lets such a food for infants depart from the rules for infant formula where its medical use requires.235
Both German boxes carry that legal name, and both say in bold to use a special formula only after talking to the pediatrician, and only for as long as the symptoms need.23
How do Comfort and Anti-Reflux differ?
Comfort has hydrolysed whey protein, less lactose than a standard formula, maltodextrin and some starch, and the box says it is for wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation.2
Anti-Reflux keeps intact milk protein, has lactose as its only carbohydrate and is thickened with locust bean gum; the box says it is for frequent spitting up, and each bottle stands for seven minutes to thicken.3 What that gum is, and what EFSA assessed it for, is its own page, and so is making the bottle up.
The longer versions of both halves: when to use Comfort and how long a baby can stay on it, and what the evidence supports for colic.
When should you use one?
Only when the pediatrician agrees. Both boxes say so, and neither is for a baby who has, or is suspected of having, a cow's milk protein allergy.23
The NHS adds a warning for anti-reflux formulas made up with cooler water than usual: powdered formula is not sterile, and lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain, so take extra care.4
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between HiPP Comfort and Anti-Reflux?
What they are for and how they are made. Comfort is for wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation, with broken-down protein, less lactose and some starch; Anti-Reflux is for frequent spitting up, with intact milk protein thickened by locust bean gum.
Can I buy HiPP Comfort or Anti-Reflux without a doctor?
Shops sell them freely, but both boxes say to use a special formula only after talking to your pediatrician, and only as long as the symptoms need it; the NHS gives the same advice for anti-reflux formula.
Does HiPP Comfort help with colic?
HiPP says so for colic linked to lactose, and says a baby should feel better within a few days. The NHS says comfort formulas are supposed to help with colic and constipation, but that there is no evidence for this. Talk to your pediatrician before you use it; HiPP UK sells its Comfort Milk for the same purpose, also under medical supervision.
Does HiPP Anti-Reflux stop reflux?
It is thickened to reduce spitting up, HiPP says. The NHS describes anti-reflux formula as thickened with the aim of preventing reflux and recommends using it only on a health professional's advice.
Are they for a baby with a cow's milk allergy?
No. Both boxes say not to use them if a baby has, or is suspected of having, a cow's milk protein allergy.
Why does HiPP Anti-Reflux need to stand?
The locust bean gum needs time to thicken the feed: the box says to let it stand for seven minutes, shake it again and check the temperature before feeding.
Are HiPP Comfort and Anti-Reflux organic?
No. Neither German box carries Bio in its name or an EU organic logo, unlike HiPP's standard Bio Combiotik formulas.
Does HiPP sell Comfort and Anti-Reflux in the UK?
Yes. HiPP UK lists a Comfort Milk and an Anti-Reflux Milk, also foods for special medical purposes. This site covers the UK Comfort Milk beside the German boxes; it has no record yet for the UK Anti-Reflux Milk.
