HiPP Comfort Milk 800 g tin, UK label, front
Front of the pack

HiPP UK Comfort Milk is a food for special medical purposes, from birth, which HiPP UK sells for the dietary management of colic and constipation. It has hydrolysed whey protein, less lactose than a standard formula, maltodextrin and starch, and galacto-oligosaccharides, but no lactic culture, and it is not organic. It comes in an 800 g tin printed in English, made up with water left to cool for no more than 30 minutes. HiPP UK says to use it only under medical supervision.

Key takeaways

  • A food for special medical purposes from birth, to be used only under medical supervision, HiPP UK says.
  • Per 100 ml it has 2.7 g of lactose, where the UK First Infant Milk has 6.9 g.
  • It is thicker than a standard formula, and HiPP UK says some babies may need a faster-flow teat.
  • The NHS says there is no evidence that comfort formulas prevent colic or constipation, and that they are not for a cow's milk allergy.

What is in HiPP UK Comfort Milk?

The first ingredients are lactose, maltodextrin, vegetable oils and starch, with a beta-palmitate fat blend and hydrolysed whey protein; lactose is only part of the carbohydrate, so there is less of it than in a standard formula.1

Fish oil adds DHA at 13.2 mg per 100 ml, and HiPP adds galacto-oligosaccharides; no lactic culture is listed, and no ingredient is organic.1

Values from HiPP's product page for the United Kingdom, checked 18 September 2026. As a food for special medical purposes it is made to Regulation (EU) 2016/128, which lets its recipe depart from the ranges for infant formula where its medical use requires. HiPP gives values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.

Every value is the one HiPP UK gives for 100 ml made from 12.8 g of powder and 90 ml of water. It matches the German Comfort on every row both packs print.18

How do you prepare it?

Wash your hands and sterilise the equipment. Boil a litre of freshly run water and leave it to cool for no longer than 30 minutes, measure the water into the bottle and add one level scoop of 4.3 g for each fluid ounce, about 30 ml.1

Shake it for about fifteen seconds, cool it under the cold tap to around body temperature, test it and feed it straight away. The milk is thicker than a standard formula, and HiPP UK says some babies may need a faster-flow teat.1

HiPP's own chart from the pack; water a day is feeds times water per feed. Babies vary, and a hungry or sleepy baby is a better guide than the table.

HiPP UK's guide runs from the first two weeks to twelve months, and it calls the amounts a guide only: a baby should be fed on demand.1

Who is it for, and who is it not for?

HiPP UK says Comfort Milk is for the dietary management of colic and constipation from birth, should only be used under medical supervision, and should be discussed with a health professional before use.1

It is cow's milk protein, broken down, so it is not for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk allergy; the NHS says the same of comfort formulas.16

Questions parents ask

What is HiPP UK Comfort Milk for?

HiPP UK sells it for the dietary management of colic and constipation, from birth, as a food for special medical purposes: under medical supervision it can be a baby's only food, or part of a weaning diet from around six months.

Do I need a doctor to use HiPP UK Comfort Milk?

HiPP UK says it should only be used under medical supervision, and asks parents to take advice from a health professional before they start it.

Does HiPP UK Comfort Milk help with colic?

HiPP UK says the reduced lactose helps with colic and the broken-down protein eases digestion. The NHS says comfort formulas are supposed to help with colic and constipation, but that there is no evidence for this.

Is HiPP UK Comfort Milk the same as the German Comfort?

The milk is. They match per 100 ml on every row both packs print, and this tin adds chromium, molybdenum and salt that the German box leaves off its panel. Both take a 4.3 g scoop to 30 ml of water. The German box adds the culture L. fermentum and asks for water at 40 to 50 °C; the UK tin lists no culture and follows the NHS method instead.

Why do some photos show a box that says combiotic?

That is the earlier pack. HiPP UK sells Comfort Milk in the tin shown here now, and its ingredients list no culture; some sellers still photograph the old box.

Can HiPP UK Comfort Milk be used for a cow's milk allergy?

No. Its protein is broken down, but it is still cow's milk protein; the NHS says partly broken-down comfort formula is not suitable for a baby with a cow's milk allergy.

How long should a baby stay on it?

HiPP UK says it is suitable from birth to one year, that colic and constipation often ease as a baby grows and starts solid food, and that a health professional can say when to move a baby off it.

Is HiPP UK Comfort Milk organic?

No. HiPP UK sells it under its HiPP Organic name, but none of the ingredients it lists is organic, unlike its First Infant and Follow On Milks.

Is HiPP UK Comfort Milk approved by the FDA?

No. The FDA does not approve infant formulas, and this tin is made in Germany for the UK market. No HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States.
