The answer

HiPP Bio Combiotik is HiPP's organic cow's milk formula in Germany and the Netherlands, named for two things it adds: galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic, and the lactic culture L. fermentum. Germany sells PRE and Stage 1 from birth, Stage 2 after six months and Stage 3 from the tenth month; the Netherlands sells Stage 1 from birth, then 2 and 3. The versions differ in starch and pack: the Dutch Stage 1 has none, in an 800 g tin; the German Stage 1 a little, in a 600 g box.

Key takeaways

  • Germany sells PRE and Stage 1 from birth, Stage 2 after six months and Stage 3 from the tenth month; the Netherlands sells Stage 1, 2 and 3, and no PRE.
  • HiPP says moving on from PRE or Stage 1 is possible but not required, and the NHS says first infant formula serves the whole first year.
  • The Dutch Stage 1 and the German PRE have lactose as their only carbohydrate; the German Stage 1 adds a little starch.
  • Organic Life Start, our partner retailer, sells the Dutch and German Combiotik formulas in the table in the United States; ordering through this site pays us a commission.

The table holds the Combiotik formulas this site has records for, each from its own pack. HiPP's German and Dutch sites list the rest of the range, stage by stage, with their ages.12

HiPP Austria also exports English-language Combiotic boxes, which HiPP's Lithuanian site lists: the International Stage 1 has the German PRE's recipe, and the International Stage 2 the German Stage 2 without starch.1314

How does Combiotik differ from HiPP's other milks?

Combiotik is HiPP's cow's milk line with the prebiotic and the culture added. Beside it, HiPP sells HA formulas with broken-down (hydrolysed) protein, formulas made from goat's milk, and Comfort and Anti-Reflux, which HiPP describes as foods for special medical purposes, to be used only under medical supervision.19

The brand hub sets HiPP's lines out country by country.

How do you choose between the versions?

Start with the carbohydrate. The Dutch Stage 1 and the German PRE have lactose as their only carbohydrate; the German Stage 1 adds a little starch, which HiPP says makes it creamier and more filling.34510

The stage number is less of a decision than it looks: HiPP says moving on from PRE or Stage 1 is possible but not required, and the NHS says first infant formula serves the whole first year.67

Then the pack. The Dutch 800 g tin holds a third more powder than the German 600 g box, and the prices of each, per pack and per ounce, are on the product pages and in the cost calculator.

Questions parents ask

What does Combiotik mean?

It is HiPP's name for two things these formulas add: galacto-oligosaccharides, a prebiotic, and the lactic culture Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, both listed on the packs.

Is HiPP's UK formula part of Combiotik?

HiPP's UK site sells its formulas as HiPP Organic First Infant Milk, Follow On Milk and Growing Up Milk, with no Combiotic in their names and no stage numbers. This page covers the German, Dutch and English export Combiotik boxes, which are the ones milkatlas has records for.

Do I have to move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 at six months?

No. HiPP says moving on is possible but not required, and the NHS says first infant formula is the only formula a baby needs in the first year.

Which versions can I order in the US?

The Dutch Stage 1, 2 and 3, and the German PRE, Stage 1, both Stage 2 boxes and Stage 3: Organic Life Start, our partner retailer, sells and ships them, and this site earns a commission. None of them is sold under US rules: sellers import them from Europe.

Why does the German Stage 1 have starch and the Dutch does not?

HiPP sells a separate recipe in each country and gives no reason for the difference on its product pages. It describes the starch in the German Stage 1 as what makes that formula creamier and more filling, which is its own claim about its own product, not the result of a trial.

Is there a Dutch PRE?

No. HiPP's Dutch site lists no PRE; the Dutch Stage 1 has lactose as its only carbohydrate, as the German PRE does.

Are the Dutch tin and the German PRE box the same powder?

On every value this site records, their panels match per 100 ml, and both take a 4.3 g scoop for every 30 ml of water. They are made for different markets, so use the scoop and the chart from the pack in your hand.

What comes after Stage 3?

In Germany, Kindermilch 1+ from one year and 2+ from two years; in the Netherlands, Junior from two years. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the European Food Safety Authority both say most toddlers do not need a toddler milk at all, and whole cow's milk from the first birthday is the usual next step.

Corrections (2)
  • Rewritten from HiPP's German, Dutch and UK range pages and the packs. The hub had described UK and Polish Combiotik versions this site has no records for (HiPP's UK formulas are sold as HiPP Organic, without Combiotic in the name), given Stage 3 as from ten or twelve months (both HiPP sites say ten), and said the UK version does not ship to Canada and that the German market prefers a thicker Stage 1, neither of which had a source. It also stated in its own words that Comfort was for babies with wind or constipation; HiPP's own description, a food for special medical purposes used under medical supervision, replaces it. (before publication)
  • HiPP's HA formulas are now described as using broken-down (hydrolysed) protein, as the German packs say; they had been described as partly broken down. (before publication)
