The answer

HiPP German Comfort is a food for special medical purposes, from birth, which the box says is for the dietary management of wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation. It has hydrolysed whey protein, less lactose than a standard formula, maltodextrin and some starch, with galacto-oligosaccharides and the culture L. fermentum; it is not organic. The box says to use it only after talking to the pediatrician, and only as long as the symptoms need. The NHS finds no evidence that comfort formulas prevent colic or constipation.
Key takeaways
- A food for special medical purposes, labelled from birth, to be used under medical supervision.
- Per 100 ml it has 2.7 g of lactose, where HiPP's German PRE has 6.9 g.
- Not for a baby who has, or is suspected of having, a cow's milk protein allergy, the box says.
- The NHS says there is no evidence that comfort formulas help with colic or constipation.
What is in HiPP German Comfort?
The carbohydrate is lactose, maltodextrin and starch, so there is less lactose than in a standard formula; the protein is hydrolysed whey protein. The box calls it lactose-reduced, with a special fat structure and split protein.2
Fish oil adds DHA at 13.2 mg per 100 ml, and HiPP adds galacto-oligosaccharides and the lactic culture Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716. It is not organic.2

Values from HiPP's label for Germany, checked 15 October 2026. As a food for special medical purposes it is made to Regulation (EU) 2016/128, which lets its recipe depart from the ranges for infant formula where its medical use requires. The label prints values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.
Every value is the one HiPP prints for 100 ml of made-up feed, which is 12.8 g of powder in 90 ml of water. The lactose is well below a standard formula's, and maltodextrin and starch make up the difference.29

How do you prepare it?
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to 40 to 50 °C, pour it into the bottle and add one level scoop (4.3 g) for every 30 ml. Shake it hard, cool it to about body temperature and check it; HiPP says to make each bottle fresh.2
| Water | Scoops | Powder | Feed size | Water temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 ml · 1 fl oz | 1 | 4.3 g | 33 ml · 1.1 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 90 ml · 3 fl oz | 3 | 12.9 g | 100 ml · 3.4 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 120 ml · 4 fl oz | 4 | 17.2 g | 133 ml · 4.5 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 150 ml · 5 fl oz | 5 | 21.5 g | 167 ml · 5.6 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 180 ml · 6 fl oz | 6 | 25.8 g | 200 ml · 6.8 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
| 210 ml · 7 fl oz | 7 | 30.1 g | 233 ml · 7.9 fl oz | 40 to 50 °C · 104 to 122 °F |
One scoop is 4.3 g, level, not packed. The feed size column is the volume in the bottle after the powder dissolves.

- Frisches Trinkwasser abkochen und auf ca. 40 - 50 °C abkühlen*.
- Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40 to 50 °C.

- Empfohlene Pulvermenge (s. Tabelle) abmessen. Messlöffel locker füllen und abstreifen. Pulver zum Wasser geben.
- Measure the powder the table gives. Fill the scoop loosely and level it off. Add the powder to the water.
- Fläschchen verschließen und mehrmals kräftig schütteln.
- Close the bottle and shake it hard several times.
- Auf Trinktemperatur (ca. 37 °C) abkühlen. Temperatur überprüfen.
- Let it cool to drinking temperature, about 37 °C, and check it.
How much should a baby drink?
| Age | Feeds a day | Water per feed | Scoops | Made-up bottle | Water a day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 2 | 7 to 8 | 60 ml | 2 | 70 ml | 420 to 480 ml |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | 5 to 7 | 90 ml | 3 | 100 ml | 450 to 630 ml |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | 5 to 6 | 120 ml | 4 | 135 ml | 600 to 720 ml |
| Months 3 to 4 | 5 | 150 ml | 5 | 170 ml | 750 ml |
| Month 5 | 4 to 5 | 180 ml | 6 | 200 ml | 720 to 900 ml |
| From month 6 | 4 | 210 ml | 7 | 235 ml | 840 ml |
HiPP's own chart from the pack; water a day is feeds times water per feed. Babies vary, and a hungry or sleepy baby is a better guide than the table.
The chart runs from the first week, and the box calls its amounts guidelines.2
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
The box says it is for the dietary management of wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation, under medical supervision, from birth as the only food and after six months as part of a mixed diet, and in bold to use it only after talking to the pediatrician and only as long as the symptoms need.2
It must not be used if a baby has, or is suspected of having, a cow's milk protein allergy, the box says, and the NHS says the same of comfort formulas.26

Questions parents ask
What is HiPP Comfort for?
The box says it is for the dietary management of wind, colic linked to lactose and constipation in babies, under medical supervision, from birth as the only food and after six months as part of a mixed diet.
Does HiPP Comfort work for colic?
HiPP says a baby should feel better within a few days, and to see the pediatrician again if not. The NHS says comfort formulas are supposed to help with colic and constipation, but that there is no evidence for this. Talk to the pediatrician before you start it, and again if nothing changes after a few days.
Do I need a doctor to use HiPP Comfort?
The box says to use it only after talking to your pediatrician, and only as long as the symptoms need it.
Is HiPP Comfort lactose-free?
No. It has less lactose than a standard formula, 2.7 g per 100 ml, with maltodextrin and starch making up the rest of the carbohydrate. The box calls it lactose-reduced.
Can HiPP Comfort be used for a cow's milk allergy?
No. The box says not to use it if a baby has, or is suspected of having, a cow's milk protein allergy, even though its whey protein is broken down; the NHS says the same of comfort formulas.
How is HiPP Comfort different from HA?
Both use hydrolysed whey protein and neither is for a cow's milk allergy. Comfort is a food for special medical purposes with less lactose, maltodextrin and starch; HA is an ordinary infant formula, labelled from birth with lactose as its only carbohydrate, and it is not sold for any symptom.
Is HiPP Comfort made up differently?
No. The box gives HiPP's usual method: water boiled and cooled to 40 to 50 °C, one level scoop for every 30 ml, shaken and cooled to drinking temperature, with no standing time.
Is HiPP Comfort approved by the FDA?
No. The FDA does not approve infant formulas, and this box is made for the German market. No HiPP formula is on the FDA's list of formulas marketed in the United States.
How long does an opened box last?
HiPP says to close the bag well, keep it dry at room temperature, and use it within 3 weeks of opening it.

Corrections (1)
- The nutrition table had left out three rows that HiPP's artwork for the box prints: salt, 0.05 g per 100 ml, chromium, 0.70 µg, and molybdenum, 2.3 µg. They are now in the table. The page had also said the UK Comfort Milk prints those three where this box does not; both print them, at the same values, and the page now says so.
