HiPP scoop size and water ratio
The answer
Most HiPP formulas use one level scoop for every 30 ml of water, but the scoop itself is not the same in every pack. Across the packs this site records, a scoop weighs between 3.6 and 5.7 g, and the toddler milks change the ratio as well: their larger scoop goes into 45 ml. Use the scoop that came in the pack you are feeding from, and read the pack's own table rather than the last one you learned.
Key takeaways
- One level scoop to 30 ml of water on every HiPP infant and follow-on formula this site records.
- The scoop weight differs by pack, from 3.6 g to 5.7 g, so the same number of scoops is not the same amount of powder.
- The toddler milks are the exception on both counts: a 5.7 g scoop into 45 ml.
- Two packs of the same stage from different markets can carry different scoops: the German Stage 1 is 4.4 g, the Dutch is 4.3 g.
- Level the scoop with the edge built into the pack; a heaped scoop mixes the bottle too strong.
What is the HiPP scoop to water ratio?
One level scoop for every 30 ml of water, on every HiPP infant and follow-on formula this site has checked, Dutch, German, British and export alike.12
The toddler milks break that rule. Their scoop is larger and goes into 45 ml, so a Kindermilch bottle is mixed on a different arithmetic from the infant formula beside it on the shelf.3

Why is the scoop a different size in different packs?
Because the powders are not the same. HiPP sizes the scoop to the recipe, so a formula with starch and one without do not need the same volume to deliver the same feed.12
The German Stage 1 scoop holds 4.4 g and the Dutch Stage 1 scoop 4.3 g. Both go into 30 ml, so the bottles look identical and are not.12

What changes with the toddler milks?
Both the scoop and the water. A Kindermilch scoop is 5.7 g into 45 ml, where the Dutch Junior keeps the infant ratio with a smaller 3.6 g scoop.3

How level is a level scoop?
Level means filled loosely and struck flat against the edge built into the pack, not pressed down and not shaken flat. Packing the powder in adds weight the chart never allowed for.1
The finished bottle holds a little more than the water you measured, because the powder takes up room: HiPP prints 12.9 g into 90 ml making 100 ml of feed.1
Level Filled loosely, then struck flat against the edge built into the pack.
Heaped More powder than the chart allows for: the bottle mixes too strong.
Pressed down Looks level, but packing the powder in adds weight the chart never allowed for.
One level scoop to every 30 ml of water, on every HiPP infant and follow-on formula this site has checked.

Questions parents ask
How big is a HiPP scoop?
It depends on the pack. Across the HiPP packs this site records, the scoop runs from 3.6 g on the Dutch Junior to 5.7 g on the German Kindermilch. The infant formulas sit within half a gram of each other.
How much water does one scoop go into?
30 ml on every HiPP infant and follow-on formula here. The toddler milks use 45 ml, which is the only ratio change in the range.
Can I use the scoop from another HiPP tin?
No. Two HiPP scoops can differ by a gram, and a gram at every feed is a meaningful change in strength for a small baby. Each pack's chart assumes the scoop that came in it, and HiPP's German boxes say to use only that scoop.
How many scoops make a 150 ml bottle?
Five, on any pack that uses one scoop to 30 ml of water. What differs between packs is how much powder those five scoops weigh: five German Stage 1 scoops are half a gram heavier than five Dutch ones, which is the sort of difference that adds up over a day of bottles rather than in a single feed.
Do I measure the water before or after the powder?
Water first, then powder. The chart is written as water plus scoops, so filling a bottle to a line after the powder is in gives a weaker feed than HiPP intends, and the error grows with the size of the bottle.
What does a level scoop mean?
Filled loosely, then struck flat against the levelling edge in the pack rather than pressed down or shaken. A heaped or packed scoop carries noticeably more powder than the chart allows for.
Why does the German Stage 1 have a different scoop from the Dutch?
Because they are different recipes: the German Stage 1 contains starch and the Dutch Stage 1 does not, so the same volume of powder weighs differently and HiPP sizes the scoop to the powder. The ratio of one scoop to 30 ml holds for both.
Does the finished bottle come to exactly the water volume?
No, a little more, because the powder takes up room: 12.9 g in 90 ml makes 100 ml of feed.
How many scoops are in a whole tin?
About 186 level scoops in an 800 g Dutch tin. It is a useful number for working out how long a pack lasts, and the cost tool does that arithmetic.
What if I have lost the scoop?
Ask HiPP for a replacement rather than substituting one. If you must feed in the meantime, weigh the powder: the pack's own gram figure is the one number that does not depend on the scoop.
