HiPP feeding calculator

The answer

This calculator turns a baby's weight and age into bottles of HiPP formula. It starts from the American Academy of Pediatrics' rule of thumb, about 2.5 fl oz of formula a day for every pound of weight and usually no more than 32 fl oz, splits it over the bottles HiPP's chart gives for the age, and rounds each bottle to whole scoops of the pack's own size. For the first weeks it gives HiPP's chart itself. It is a starting point; your baby is the better guide.

By the American Academy of Pediatrics' rule of thumb: about 2.5 fl oz of formula a day for every pound of weight, at most 32 fl oz. Each bottle is rounded to whole scoops, so the day comes out a little over or under.

The bottles, the water and the scoops come from each pack's own chart and scoop, and the amount a day from the rule of thumb of the American Academy of Pediatrics.1456

How is the amount worked out?

The American Academy of Pediatrics puts a baby's formula at about 2.5 fl oz a day for every pound of body weight, and usually no more than 32 fl oz in 24 hours; the calculator starts from that, and holds the day at the most.1

It divides the day by the number of bottles HiPP's chart gives for the age, taking the middle where the chart gives a range. It then works out the water that makes that much feed at HiPP's own dilution and rounds it to whole scoops, because HiPP's rule is one level scoop for every 30 ml.45

The powder a day is the scoops times the scoop's weight in grams, and a pack lasts its weight divided by that. For the first weeks, where a newborn's small feeds do not follow the weight rule, the result is HiPP's chart for the age.13

HiPP prints the same chart on the German PRE and Stage 1 boxes, where it also gives the made-up bottle for each age.456

Questions parents ask

How much formula should a 2 month old drink?

By the American Academy of Pediatrics' rule of thumb, about 2.5 fl oz a day for every pound the baby weighs. HiPP's chart for weeks five to eight gives 5 to 6 bottles of 120 ml of water. Babies vary, and your pediatrician knows yours.

Is the calculator different for HiPP PRE and Stage 1?

Only in the scoop. HiPP prints the same chart on the German PRE, the German Stage 1 and the Dutch Stage 1, so the water per bottle is the same; the powder differs a little, because the German Stage 1 scoop holds 4.4 g and the others 4.3 g.

What is the most formula a baby should have in a day?

The American Academy of Pediatrics gives about 32 fl oz in 24 hours as the usual most, and the calculator holds the day there even when the weight rule gives more. A baby who keeps wanting more should see the pediatrician.

Does it work in pounds and fluid ounces?

Yes. Choose lb for the weight, and each bottle shows in both units; measure the water in millilitres if you can, because HiPP sets its scoop against 30 ml.

Why does it round to whole scoops?

Because HiPP's instruction is one level scoop for every 30 ml of water, and a part scoop cannot be measured reliably at the kitchen counter. The day's total therefore comes out a little over or under the rule of thumb, and the note under the result says so.

What if my baby drinks more or less than the result?

Follow your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics says babies regulate their own intake from day to day, and to talk to your pediatrician if yours keeps wanting clearly more or less than the rule of thumb.

Can I use the calculator for a premature baby?

No. A baby born early is fed to a plan set by the neonatal team and the pediatrician, and the amounts in that plan can change week by week as the baby grows, so a general rule of thumb is the wrong starting point.

How many scoops are in a tin of HiPP Dutch Stage 1?

About 186 level scoops of 4.3 g in the 800 g tin, and the calculator shows how many days that lasts.

How many bottles does a tin of HiPP make?

It depends on the bottle. A tin of HiPP Dutch Stage 1 holds about 186 level scoops, so at the 150 ml bottle HiPP's chart gives for months three to four, 5 scoops each, it makes about 37 bottles.

Why does the calculator use HiPP's chart in the first weeks?

A newborn takes small feeds that grow week by week, which a rule by weight does not describe; the American Academy of Pediatrics puts a first-week feed at a small amount. For those weeks the calculator shows HiPP's own chart for the formula you chose, bottle by bottle, before the weight rule takes over.

Does the calculator store anything?

No. The arithmetic runs in your own browser, and nothing you enter, neither the weight nor the age, is sent anywhere or kept.
