## The answer

*Front of the pack*

You cannot order this through milkatlas in the United States. The sellers below ship it there.

HiPP German Stage 1 ready to feed is HiPP's organic Stage 1 infant formula, already mixed and sealed in a 200 ml bottle, labelled from birth and made in Germany. The difference from the powder is on the front: a roundel saying it contains lactose only. The powder Stage 1 has starch, this bottle has none, and it carries more lactose instead. Energy, protein, fat and total carbohydrate are identical, though a few vitamins and minerals differ.

## Key takeaways

- The organic Stage 1, ready to drink in a 200 ml bottle, labelled from birth like the PRE.
- No starch, where the Stage 1 powder has it: the bottle's only carbohydrate is lactose.
- Energy, protein, fat and total carbohydrate match the powder; lactose moves because the starch is gone, and L-carnitine, potassium, vitamin B2 and inositol differ too.
- No lactic culture in the ingredient list, so COMBIOTIK on this front means the galacto-oligosaccharides alone.
- An opened bottle keeps 24 hours in the fridge, warmed to about 40 °C and never in a microwave.

## What is in HiPP German Stage 1 ready to feed?

Organic whey product, skimmed milk and cream come first, then lactose, organic sunflower and rapeseed oils, galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose and a lecithin emulsifier. There is no starch anywhere in the list. (Source 2)

The powder Stage 1 puts organic starch fourth. Taking it out is why this bottle carries more lactose per 100 ml than the powder does, and why HiPP can print a roundel on the front saying it contains lactose only. (Source 2) (Source 3)

No lactic culture is listed, and the long-chain fats come from algal oil and *Mortierella alpina* oil rather than fish oil, so the allergen line reads milk alone. (Source 2)

*The start of the ingredients list as printed on the label, in German; the list runs on down the bottle. The asterisk marks organic ingredients.*

Evidence · Manufacturer claim

The front claims strictest quality controls and lactose only, and calls the milk ideal for topping up. There is no worded claim for the galacto-oligosaccharides or the DHA. Those are HiPP's claims. (Source 2)

Values from HiPP's label for Germany, checked 21 September 2026. The last column is the range for infant formula in Regulation (EU) 2016/127, Annex I, per 100 kcal unless it says per 100 ml. The label prints values per 100 ml only, so the per 100 kcal column is calculated from them.

The values are for 100 ml of the milk as poured. Against the Stage 1 powder, energy, protein, fat and total carbohydrate are identical, and lactose is higher here by the starch the powder carries: 7.1 g against the powder's 5.9 g, beside its 1.0 g of starch. (Source 2) (Source 3)

The rest of the panel is close rather than identical. L-carnitine, potassium, vitamin B2 and inositol differ, and so does the split between saturated and monounsaturated fat, by amounts neither label explains. (Source 2) (Source 3)

*The top of the composition panel on the label, per 100 ml. If the label and this page ever disagree, the label is right and we log a correction.*

Evidence · Regulation

The bottle is sold as an infant formula, so its composition must sit inside Regulation (EU) 2016/127, Annex I, the ranges in the last column. (Source 4)

## How do you prepare it?

Check the cap and seal film, shake the sealed bottle, open it and pour what you need into a feeding bottle. Warm that to about 40 °C, never in a microwave, cool it to about 37 °C and check it on your wrist. (Source 2)

Nothing is added: the bottle is already at drinking strength. Pour out what you need, warm it to about 40 °C, check it at about 37 °C, and keep an opened bottle in the fridge for no longer than 24 hours.

- **Die noch versiegelte Flasche vor dem ersten Öffnen kräftig schütteln.**: Shake the still-sealed bottle hard before opening it for the first time.
- **Benötigte Trinkmenge in ein Fläschchen füllen und auf ca. 40 °C erwärmen.**: Pour the amount you need into a feeding bottle and warm it to about 40 °C.
- **Die Nahrung sofort füttern und Reste verwerfen.**: Feed it at once and throw away what is left.
- **Geöffnetes, unerwärmtes Fläschchen verschlossen im Kühlschrank (max. 6 °C) aufbewahren und innerhalb von 24h aufbrauchen.**: Keep an opened, unwarmed bottle closed in the fridge at no more than 6 °C and use it within 24 hours.

Evidence · Regulation

Sealed liquid milk is sterile and powder is not, which is why the CDC writes its extra preparation steps for powdered formula and names ready-to-feed formula where water cannot be made safe by boiling. (Source 5)

## How much should a baby drink?

**Feeding chart by age**

| Age | Feeds a day | Ready to drink | Milk a day |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Weeks 1 to 2 | 7 to 8 | 70 ml | 490 to 560 ml |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | 5 to 7 | 100 ml | 500 to 700 ml |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | 5 to 6 | 135 ml | 675 to 810 ml |
| Months 3 to 4 | 5 | 170 ml | 850 ml |
| Month 5 | 4 to 5 | 200 ml | 800 to 1000 ml |
| From month 6 | 4 | 235 ml | 940 ml |

HiPP's own chart from the pack; milk a day is feeds times the bottle. Babies vary, and a hungry or sleepy baby is a better guide than the table.

HiPP prints the bottle itself, not water and scoops: 70 ml a feed in the first fortnight, rising to 235 ml from the sixth month, with the number of feeds falling as the volume grows. (Source 2)

Evidence · Manufacturer claim

HiPP marks the chart as guide values that can vary, and says the first two weeks stand unless the doctor advises otherwise. (Source 2)

## Who is it for, and who is it not for?

The bottle carries the infant formula notice: breastfeeding is best, and talk to your pediatrician or midwife before using a formula. HiPP puts it forward both as the only feed from birth and as a top-up. (Source 2)

It is cow's milk formula, so it is not for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy, and it is not lactose-free. With lactose as its only carbohydrate, it carries more of it per 100 ml than the powder. (Source 2) (Source 6)

Evidence · No evidence found

HiPP gives no reason on the pack for leaving the starch out of the liquid, and we found no evidence that a baby needs the starched version or the unstarched one. Starch in a first formula thickens the feed; the NHS makes no recommendation either way. (Source 6)

Our view

If your baby is on the Stage 1 powder and you want bottles for the road, know that you are also taking the starch out. That is not a problem, but if the powder suited a hungry baby because it sat heavier, the bottle may not feel the same, and the PRE bottle is the closer match to it than the name suggests.

Great little company!

## Questions parents ask

### What is the difference between HiPP Stage 1 ready to feed and the powder?

Starch. The powder Stage 1 lists organic starch as its fourth ingredient and prints a starch row in its table; the bottle has neither, and carries more lactose in its place. Most other rows match, though L-carnitine, potassium, vitamin B2, inositol and the split of the fats differ.

### What is the difference between PRE and Stage 1 in the bottles?

Not much. Both are labelled from birth and neither liquid has starch, so the two bottles are closer to each other than the two powders are, where the Stage 1 box has starch and the PRE box does not. Most rows differ by a rounding step at most; iron and manganese differ by more, and the PRE bottle's 2026 print has more magnesium and adds taurine.

### Is it suitable from birth?

Yes. The front says from birth, and HiPP offers it either as the only feed or for topping up beside breastfeeding.

### Why does the front say it contains lactose only?

Because this liquid has no starch and no other added carbohydrate, so lactose is the whole of it. HiPP prints the same roundel on other packs whose carbohydrate is lactose alone; on the Stage 1 powder it would not be true.

### Is there a probiotic in it?

No. The ingredient list has galacto-oligosaccharides, which are a prebiotic, and no lactic culture, although the front carries the COMBIOTIK name that HiPP uses for the pairing of the two.

### How do I warm it?

Shake the sealed bottle, take off the cap and the film, and pour what you need into a feeding bottle. Warm that to about 40 °C, never in a microwave, because a microwave heats unevenly and can leave scalding pockets. Let it come down to about 37 °C and check it on your wrist. Feed it straight away and pour away whatever the baby leaves.

### How long does an opened bottle keep?

Closed in the fridge at no more than 6 °C, used within 24 hours, and never kept once it has been warmed.

### Does it have fish oil?

No. Its DHA comes from algal oil and its arachidonic acid from Mortierella alpina oil, where the powder uses fish oil. That is why the bottle declares milk as its only allergen and the powder box declares milk and fish.

### Is it organic?

Yes. Its legal name is organic infant milk formula and the milk, cream, lactose, oils and galacto-oligosaccharides are all marked organic in the ingredient list.

### Where can I buy it outside Germany?

Two sellers this site tracks ship it to the United States and Canada by the case. The sellers table below gives what each charges for one bottle and when we last read the price.

**Corrections (1)**

- 25 September 2026 · The page had said nine of the ten values this site records match the Stage 1 powder, with lactose the only one that moves, and that the PRE and Stage 1 bottles differ by a rounding step and nothing else. With the full panels recorded, 34 of the 42 rows both labels print match the powder: lactose is higher by the starch the powder carries, and L-carnitine, potassium, vitamin B2, inositol and the split of the fats differ too. Against the PRE bottle, iron and manganese differ by more than a rounding step, and since HiPP's 2026 PRE recipe so do magnesium and taurine. The page now says so. (before publication)
